There was so much buzz last year about the smart, sexy and stylish red-hot mamas on Desperate Housewives you?d think they had invented the type. But if you remember back two years, their predecessor was a modern TV yummy mummy who debuted in 2003 on the Thursday night hit The O.C. As played by Kelly Rowan, the character of Kirsten Cohen is not only blonde and beautiful, but has a loving husband, a still-hot marriage, a teenage son and a high-powered career in real estate and publishing. Granted, she also epitomizes some of the less-sexy realities of real-life overscheduled, overworked and sometimes overwhelmed mothers ? although in a much more glam setting (and with a closet full of Jimmy Choo stilettos). The O.C. is a surprise critical hit and a full-blown pop-culture phenomenon, with Rowan?s portrayal of a new, cool motherhood as the cherry on the guilty-pleasure sundae.

So when did TV mothers suddenly turn all modern and realistic? These days, father definitely doesn?t know best. In TV?s early days, shows like Leave It to Beaver and The Donna Reed Show championed an idyllic life with Dad at the head of the table and Mom, a devoted domestic creature, by his side. ?The idealized mother of the 1950s, such as June Cleaver and Donna Reed, probably had little root in reality,? explains Ron Simon, a curator at the Museum of Television and Radio in New York. ?One of the first TV mothers to crack that role was Maude, a liberal feminist on her fourth marriage. She was not an idealized portrait.?

Flaws and all, motherhood is back in style this fall and the rebirth of a 1950s staple isn?t taking place just on the small screen. This season is celebrating the return of the circle skirt and a continuing style rage for the Hermes Kelly bag. There?s a new appreciation in the air for mid-century modern architecture and design. We?re appropriating the conventions of the 1950s with a fresh attitude. So it makes sense that on TV ? one of pop culture?s basic common denominators ? today?s post-feminism is putting a new twist on the dusty old stereotypes of motherhood.

When I meet Rowan at Le Pain Quotidien on Melrose Avenue, she?s dressed for ?everyday? in a gold Marni jacket, an opera-length strand of Lanvin pearls, jeans and a pair of espadrilles by her favourite label, the fashion-forward Dutch designer Dries Van Noten. (She says the well-heeled character of Kirsten is a lot more conservative and less casual than her.) She looks like an L.A. hottie ? not a girl born in Ottawa and raised in Toronto, who once modelled for Eaton?s and the Bay catalogues, and certainly not a Newport Beach mother (?a Newpsie,? as Rowan dubs her character on The O.C.).

You might be surprised to learn that Rowan, who is now 38, has been a hard-working actress for nearly 21 years. She appeared in the Paris-filmed Canadian TV series Mount Royal in 1987 (although her acting career was interrupted by a stint pursuing a commerce degree at the University of Western Ontario). Her long list of acting credits includes not only gunslinger Mattie Shaw in the TV series Lonesome Dove , but also Erin, a single small-town mother in the Canadian cult classic, Jet Boy , and Peter Pan?s mother in Steven Spielberg?s Hook , her breakout Hollywood role.

It?s ironic that Rowan lacks what could be called real-life experience for the mother roles she has often played ? the actress is single and has no kids. She doesn?t even cook. But she is quick to explain that playing a mother is no stretch: ?I think that all women, whether you are an actual mom or not, have mothering qualities and we all mother in our own way. I think it is innate, just part of who we are.?

Yet Rowan doesn?t necessarily consider her character on The O.C. to be a perfect role model for modern motherhood. By the end of last season, Kirsten had been tested by her husband?s possible infidelity, the discovery of an unknown half-sister and her romantic feelings for her male co-worker. As melodramatic as packing them all into two seasons may seem, these are common experiences that require a certain amount of worldly knowledge to ring true. ?It?s not that I?m not interested in what 20-year-olds are going through, it?s just that I?m more curious about women my own age,? says Rowan, echoing many of the viewers who identify with her character. ?We have life experience, depth and a lot of complications and challenges to deal with that are a lot more relevant to me.?

She admits that she was caught off guard by the public?s response to some of her character?s bad behaviour, like a drunken interval at the end of season two. ?But it?s great that people are becoming emotionally involved with the show to the point where they are disappointed with Kirsten,? she says. ?They have really responded to both her character and her relationship with her husband, Sandy. ?

In fact, Rowan and actor Peter Gallagher (who plays her husband on the show) are often referred to as the coolest parents on TV. ? The O.C. is so blithe in its dismissal of the ?kids good/adults bad? opposition that it?s as if that tired dramatic conflict had never existed,? said a New York Observer cover story last fall. ?That?s probably one of the reasons the show is a cross-generational hit.? Indeed, the Cohens are more than mere appendages ? unlike, for instance, the virtually expendable Jim and Cindy Walsh from Beverly Hills , 90210 . (When the kids flew the coop to university, the show conveniently dispatched them to Hong Kong.) The Cohens have a mature, realistic relationship and as much sexy intrigue surrounding them as the youngsters that populate the show.

Finally, fully rounded married adult characters ? a TV trend that?s welcomed by Calgary-born Lou Paget, a sex educator and the author of best-selling books, including the recent Hot Mamas on motherhood and sexuality. ?Shows are looking to portray couples and partners as being cohesive and together with one another, physically, spiritually and emotionally. If they are going to make the father nifty? ? and the shaggy-browed Gallagher, perhaps best-known for his racy star turn in Sex, Lies and Videotape , is indeed nifty ? ?and they want to have real interplay between the couple, then they have to make the mother nifty as well.? Today?s TV matriarch is not just a supporting role.

?Television shows have to reflect the sociological changes in life,? agrees Tara Ariano, a pop-culture columnist with The National Post and co-creator of the cultish website Television Without Pity. ?Moms on TV, like real moms, have to have jobs and interests other than just raising their kids,? she says. TV mothers like Lois on Malcolm in the Middle, Bree on Desperate Housewives and Debra on Everybody Loves Raymond, rule the roost or bring home the bacon themselves. Like their 1950s counterparts, these TV moms may be well-coiffed and beautiful, but they are a lot more ambitious and aspiring. So it stands to reason, in these workaholic times, that mothers? lives are also bound to exhibit a lot more stress and conflict.

In the recent non-fiction book Perfect Madness: Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety, Judith Warner writes: ?The working moms I knew were stressed near the breaking point, looking tired and haggard and old. They shared the same high level at-home parenting ambitions as the nonworking moms. But they held down out-of-home jobs too ? and if this wasn?t enough they also had to shoulder the burden of Guilt, a media fed drone that played in their ears every time they sat in traffic at dinnertime: Had they made the right choices? Were they really good enough mothers??

Ariano, for one, finds Rowan?s character happily free of the stereotypical trap of ?mom guilt.? She says, ?It bothers me when mothers on TV are upset or worried about the lack of time they spend with their offspring, but in Kirsten?s case it?s a non-issue. She?s got a life of her own and I find that refreshing.?

You only have to watch the traditional mom on a sitcom such as According to Jim to see how fresh the concept of the hip modern mother is on TV: Why is it just catching on now? Paget says, ?Mothers haven?t become any more important. We?re only just acknowledging it now and making it public. They have always been cool. Think about it: They are one of the most powerful role models and mentors that you can have, and it is they who have the most influence on the children?s lives.? Earlier this year, a website poll on which actresses were the sexiest moms (Pamela Anderson and Jada Pinkett Smith, incidentally) stated: ?In Hollywood, Hot Moms are as American as apple pie.?

As for Rowan, she hopes that the success of The O.C. will do its small part by creating a place for more roles featuring slightly older moms who are walking, talking role models of marrieds who are making it work. Her character is no ordinary housewife, and Rowan certainly doesn?t look desperate. Take that, Wisteria Lane.

Von Kelly Rowan bin ich seit OC ganz begeistert. Meiner Meinung nach passt sie perfekt in die Rolle der Kirsten. Sie hat sehr großes Potenzial und weiß es, Emotionen richtig über die Bühne zu bringen (ganz besonders in "The Ties that Bind" 1x27). Ihre Mimik ist außerdem supergut.
Zusammen mit Peter Gallagher schafft sie es außerdem die Liebe zwischen Sandy und Kirsten realistisch rüberzubringen. Man könnte meinen, dass die beiden Schauspieler in Realität zusammen sind.
Insgesamt mag ich Kelly sogar so gerne, dass ich grad an einer Fanseite über sie arbeite ;-)

Da stimme ich dir voll und ganz zu und die Seite will ich gerne dann mal sehen hm bin grosser Kandy Fan lol(Kirsten und Sandy)genau wie meine Bekannte hm die Kelly einfach am besten findet..^^ :D :D
